KZN musicians have vowed to work 24/7 for the government-funded record label, Music House KZN, to make sure it doesn’t collapse again due to misuse of funds.
This after KZN MEC for Arts and Culture, Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba reopened Music House KZN on Thursday, 23 May.
Music House KZN, which was managed by the late Mbongeni Ngema, was closed in 2015 for alleged misuse of funds after it had been operating since 2009.
Musician, Thokozani “Tzozo” Zulu, who is also the Cultural and Creative Industries Federation of South Africa (CCIFSA) KZN chairman, told Daily Sun they will be part of Music House KZN’s operations this time around.
“This time around, our CCIFSA offices are in the same premises as Music House KZN, so it’ll be under our eyes 24/7. We fought for it to be back to help KZN artists. We don’t want it to be for recording music only, but also want it to be a gym where artists can exercise and live a healthy lifestyle,” he said.

Tzozo said they also want Music House KZN to have a DJ academy and podcast for musicians and will fight to avoid it being a white elephant.
Music House KZN was established to prevent the exodus of local musicians from travelling to Joburg for good quality sound and avoid them recording in backroom studios.
It was built with a world-class recording studio. It also discovered and exposed many musicians, including Afrosoul, DJ Happygal, Sosha, Bullistic and Floda, free of charge.
Legendary musician, Mfiliseni Magubane also recorded there as well as Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
Afro-soul leader, Sabelo Ngema who is also Mbongeni Ngema’s nephew, told Daily Sun the reopening of Music House KZN reminds him of when he started.
“Again, we won’t travel to Joburg to record our music in private expensive studios for good quality sound,” he said.
Mahlaba said the re-opening of the facility marks a significant milestone in the rejuvenation of the province’s music industry.
“This revival is the result of extensive efforts by the arts branch of the Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture, which recognised a critical need to restore this vital entity.
“This facility will be managed with the utmost professionalism, equipped with top-tier production personnel who will nurture and refine exceptional talent in our province,” he said.
