House Music has captivated music lovers since its inception in 1980s Chicago, and this year the city has an exciting week of public programming planned to commemorate the genre’s 40th anniversary.
Beginning May 30, the city will host a series of city-wide cultural events exploring the history of House Music, culminating in the Chicago House Music Festival on June 2.
The Chicago Cultural Center will hold a special open house on May 30, from 4-8 p.m. featuring a DJing workshop, film screening, and dance class all centered around House Music. The center will also host the Chicago House Music Conference on May 31st, featuring panel discussions with artists, activists, and producers affiliated with the genre.

On Saturday, June 1, Navy Pier will host an exclusive pre-party ahead of the House Music Festival. Chicagoans are invited to enjoy a full day of live music and family fun from 1-10 p.m.
The Chicago House Music Festival will run from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. across multiple stages at Millennium Park. The lineup features performances from some of today’s biggest names in House Music. The festival will also include DJ sets, dance lessons, and other family-friendly programming.
House Music originated in Chicago, born out of the city’s underground nightclub culture and pioneered by artists like Frankie Knuckles. The genre combines elements of electronica, disco, synth-pop, and jazz. The genre is a shining example of Chicago’s unique contributions to global arts and culture.
“House Music is a global phenomenon born and raised in Chicago 40 years ago, with roots that go back even further. Like Blues, Jazz, and Gospel that came before, House is our true cultural heritage as a city—it galvanizes Chicagoans, celebrates our diversity, innovation, and joy, and invites the world to join in,” shared Mayor Brandon Johnson.
