Catching Up With DJ ELFIGO At Tomorrowland | Features – Clash Magazine

June 6, 2024

Tomorrowland 2023 was a visual feast for the eyes.
In amongst the multitude of stages on weekend two we caught up with one of the youngest performers across the weekend DJ ELFIGO who opened the Defected Records stage on Saturday of weekend two.
Having returned from an incredible weekend, talk us through your journey so far and bring our readers up to speed.
What inspired your name choice – DJ ELFIGO? The inspiration comes from a contraction of my name and last name. You can call me Elias.
How old were you when you first started to mix? I started DJing at 8 years old in Brussels, Belgium.
What were the first decks you played on – vinyl or CDJ and how long did it take before you felt really comfortable in the mix? My first decks were the Pioneer CDJ 2000, I took me a few months to master, but I had so much fun that I learned very fast. It was like gaming for me.
Talk us through some of your musical heroes & inspirations that are influencing your own electronic music style? My inspiration come from James Hype, who inspired me with his tricks and tech-house, DJ Snake for his MainStage performances, Daft Punk for the french touch, David Guetta for the hard worker spirit and Martin Garrix, for the humility and performance.
How was your time at Tomorrowland, did you enjoy your set? It was incredible, the crowd, the energy, the setting, the sound, I loved it! Such an amazing experience to perform in one the best electronic music festival in the world! I can’t wait to come back!
Did you get a chance to speak with any other DJs & performers backstage at Tomorrowland and what were your highlights musically from the weekend? Yes I had the chance to meet and speak with Lost Frequencies & Kungs. Felix gave me tips on how to lead and manage my potential future career. And Valentin gave me some inspirational ideas on how to judge my music and my creation. And I also had a quick chat and laugh & selfie with Steve Aoki.
Can we look forward to hearing a techno-house track or any other original music produced
by you soon?
Yes I am currently working on a tech house track….I still have to work a lot and define. exactly what I really want to create.
Have you started to make any edits yet to play out in your own sets? Not yet, that’s why I started music production a year ago. I still have to learn composition and fine-tune my DJ skills, I need to work more.
You have recently also branched out into radio and broadcasting, tell us about your monthly show on Stardust Radio and what listeners can expect? I started to broadcast my monthly set on Stardust Radio in January 2022. It’s a great way to share my passion for music with listeners. Most of the time, I play tech house and funky house. I try to mix old school sounds with actual tech house tracks. What excites me the most is to do some tricks between the tracks and make perfect transitions.
Where have you been honing your craft in Ibiza, tell us about your beach residency and any upcoming sets you have lined up? I am currently in France, on holidays. Relaxing and chilling. I don’t have any sets planned for the moment. During the summer there is too much competition for DJs in Ibiza. And once I will be back in Ibiza, I will to go to my music studio and practice my skills and focus on production. If I want to be ready for next summer, I would love to play my own tracks.
Tell us about being a teenager in Ibiza, how do you balance your school life with being a
rising star on the DJ circuit?
First of all, thank you for the « a rising star » but I think it’s too early to say that. At the moment, I am looking for emotions and sensations. I am practicing my skills and I
enjoy it. I love to perform on stage, and especially in private parties. After Tomorrowland, I want to mix in front thousands of people. and I believe Ibiza is the right place to be. Now, I go to school every day, like a normal kid of 12 years old. I have a great group of friends, at school. They are very supportive of me. Beside school and music, I also love coding, I have started 4 years ago with Scratch, and now learning Python.
The universe works in magical ways so let’s try and manifest some future sets, what are your dream bookings? The main stage of Tomorrowland, that would be surreal!
Do you have any tips for other aspiring young DJs and producers? My advice would be to follow your instinct, work hard and never let go!
