It’s officially summer, San Antonio natives and visitors have an opportunity to attend free, weekly dance parties and DJ showcases provided by Sound Cream Sunset Sessions. The event will continue 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. each Thursday in June and July Civic Park at Hemisfair.
Sound Cream Airstream “is a movement to take disco al-fresco bringing friends, family and business together.” Visitors can check out the various goods available at The Texas Market, cool off in the Springs, or enjoy a relaxing picnic on the Great Lawn while listening to music provided by different DJs from across Texas.
Last week’s performance doubled as a celebration of Pride Month, featuring a pioneer in Texas’ underground ballroom scene, Amarji King.
Rounding out Black Music Month, the party continues June 27 with Dallas-based DJ, BOYBLK (also known as Sterling Hasley) who is set to bring a deeper energy to the dance floor through the sounds of soul and gospel house music. In 2023, BOYBLK was awarded “Best DJ” by D Magazine.
BOYBLK is resident DJ on Friday nights at Midnight Rambler Bar in downtown Dallas, one-half of the duo Pure Silver, and founder of BLOOM Studios, an occasional DJ workshop hosted in the DFW area. On their Instagram, BLOOM is described as “cultivating the next generation of club curators and energy conductors.” To listen to some of BOYBLK’s tracks, check out his SoundCloud.
Visit San Antonio Magazine each week to read more about the featured DJ. The event is free and open to all ages. Parking is available at the Hemisfair Garage. Check out Sound Cream Sunset Sessions on Instagram for more information.
Q: Where are you from and how has your upbringing framed or inspired your approach to music?
A: I was born in Houston but was raised in the church in Fort Worth. Growing up in the church exposed me to gospel and hymns, and even though I am not religious anymore, those songs still resonate with me today, and that can be heard in my gospel and soulful house music sets.
Q: How did you get started in your career as a DJ?
A: My DJ career actually started about 13 years ago. I am a huge nerd and have been attending anime conventions for years. One day, I heard one of my favorite conventions needed a DJ and I took a leap of faith and the rest is history.
Q: You are the founder of Bloom Studios, an occasional DJ workshop hosted in the DFW area. Can you tell me about the event and what you hope to accomplish through hosting these workshops?
A: Yes. BLOOM Studio was founded by me and my good friend CB Smoove. We hope to give DJs in the DFW area and beyond the ability to feel confident in any gig situation. We talk about both the business and the technical side of DJing.
Q: What are you most excited about in performing at Sound Cream Sunset Sessions and traveling to San Antonio?
A: I am excited to meet all the dancers that will be attending. I am excited to bring my energy and sound to San Antonio! I am also excited for the food in San Antonio.
Q: What can the San Antonio community look forward to experiencing at your set on Thursday?
A: They can expect a story of sound being told that was written first by my ancestors and then published by the House music pioneers that started the genre in Chicago. They can also expect to level with a newfound passion for House music.
