Lil Wayne, Monica set to headline Blavity’s 1st music festival in Nashville – WSMV 4
by June 28, 2024NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – In just a couple of weeks, the inaugural Blavity House Party will bring its Midwest vibe to the south. Nashville’s accessibility is one of the reasons the organization decided to bring its first music festival to the city.
“Nashville has such a rich history of music, of Black music, Black culture, homes of multiple HBCUs. Why not Nashville?” said Charles Kuykendoll, Blavity’s GM of Community.
With artists like Lil Wayne, Monica, and Big Freedia, there’s something for everyone on the lineup. The organization says it wanted to focus on the African music diaspora and diversity that exists within the community.
“We have all the elements that make for an incredible experience and for you to feel comfortable bringing yourself, being yourself and having an amazing time.” Kuykendoll said.
Although there are no country music artists performing at this year’s event, festivalgoers are encouraged to bring out their western swag.
“We actually did a Country Chic theme. So, we are still tapping into country. Our merch is very heavily country, and we’re encouraging people to get some cowboy boots and bring their hats.”
Blavity recently acquired RNB House Party, an entity known for throwing parties around the U.S. Blavity hopes to build on that momentum through its music festivals. The group says the upcoming music festival brings all of the feels of a house party.
“You have that connection. You have that level of comfort. You have that ‘come as you are’ feeling. We wanted to keep those core values into what the experience would look like.”
Several local Black businesses will take part in the festival set for June 14 and June 15 at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium. Supporting Black businesses is at the epicenter of what Blavity is about. The company is building on its mission by ensuring an amazing opportunity for black businesses in Nashville. They’ve partnered with the Nashville Black Market to make sure local businesses, including food trucks, are on the grounds during the two-day event.
“We’re really excited for what the presence of the Blavity house party music festival is going to do for business owners, art studios, the event venues and spaces, the after-parties, and all the other subsidiary things happening around the ecosystem that we’re creating.”
Blavity will host several events from June 13 through June 16. It’s an opportunity to network and connect with people from several industries.
“We want you to meet people. We want you to exchange LinkedIn. We want you to have an opportunity to find a company that might be hiring,” Kuykendoll said. “Our approach is about community and connection. The music is the medium that’s bringing us all together.”
As the energy surrounding the upcoming festival intensifies, Blavity says it believes the festival will help generate millions to Nashville’s already thriving economy.
“We appreciate the love that we are getting for this experience, and it seems like the appetite is there for Nashville. They’re excited about what we’re about to bring and so let’s make this a blowout year one,” Kuykendoll said.
