Okeechobee Music Festival lineup: Kings of Leon, Usher, the Roots, the Lumineers and more – Tampa Bay Times

The Okeechobee Music and Arts Festival has just dropped the initial lineup for its second annual event in South Florida. And whether you like rock, hip hop or EDM, you might find something that’ll convince you it’s time to go camping.
Kings of Leon, the Lumineers, Wiz Khalifa and Usher performing with the Roots are among the biggest names dropped Thursday for Okeechobee 2017, taking place March 2-5 near Okeechobee, about a 2 1/2-hour drive from Tampa.
Joining them in the first wave of acts announced thus far are big-name DJs (Bassnectar, Flume, Pretty Lights, Porter Robinson), hip-hop acts (Rae Sremmurd, Anderson Paak, D.R.A.M.), rockers (Young the Giant, Cold War Kids, Bleachers, Sleigh Bells) and indie popsters (Solange, Blood Orange, Mac DeMarco). Other big names on the first wave include George Clinton and Parlaiment Funkadelic, Allen Stone, Griz, SOJA, the Revivalists, Snails, Waka Flocka Flame, Mike Posner and Tampa’s own Merchandise.

More acts will be added in the coming weeks, including, most likely, another headliner or two. Last year at this time, Okeechobee had not yet announced performances by the Avett Brothers, Robert Plant, Daryl Hall and John Oates, Bassnectar and more (listed below).

Last year’s Okeechobee, featuring headliners Mumford and Sons, Kendrick Lamar and Skrillex, made a big, pricey play to become Florida’s answer to Bonnaroo — and in many ways it worked, drawing tens of thousands of fans over four days. The setting was pristine and transformative, the food and lifestyle offerings impressive.

It disrupted the state’s festival landscape, shaking up everything from the Gasparilla Music Festival to the Florida Strawberry Festival due to its wide exclusivity clauses that boxed performers out from performing elsewhere in the state. (In other words: Don’t expect to see any of these performers stopping through Tampa on their way to or from OMF.) Already this year, Tampa’s Big Guava Music Festival and WMNF Tropical Heatwave have gone on hiatus, partly because of competition from Okeechobee and other fests.
Here’s the rest of the 2017 Okeechobee Music Festival lineup: Snakehips, Louis the Child, the Growlers, Moon Taxi, the Knocks, Gallant, Russ, Joey Purp, Blind Boys of Alabama, BADBADNOTGOOD, Lewis Del Mar, Galactic, FKJ, Joywave, the Japanese House, Bipolar Sunshine, Tennyson, Jacob Collier, Haywyre, Whethan, Louis Futon, Khruangbin, Con Brio, Nightmares on Wax, OTT, DVS1, Kaiydo, Futurebirds, Rainbow Kitten Surprise, Jacob Banks, TAUK, Ryan Elliott, Perpetual Groove, Rob Garza, Escort, Jacuzzi Boys, Cereus Bright, VHS Collection, Donna Missal, Gaudi, Sebastian Mullaert, Julio, WYK and CBDB.
Okeechobee will also see the returnof the Powow, a star-studded jam session that last year witnessed collaborations between Miguel, Arcade Fire’s Win Butler, John Oates and many more; and a new event, the Okeechobee Gospel Soul Experience, featuring the Blind Boys of Alabama, Allen Stone and more.
