Peggy Gou Rings Up 90s House Music on New Single "Lobster Telephone" – Grimy Goods

June 10, 2024

With her debut album, ‘I Hear You,’ out June 7 via XL Recordings, Gou is offering another peek into the album with “Lobster Telephone,” the latest single and her personal favorite song on the tracklist.
There’s no need to look at the title of South Korean DJ and producer Peggy Gou’s upcoming debut album to get the sense that she knows all eyes are on her. With I Hear You out June 7 via XL Recordings, she’s offering another peak into the album with “Lobster Telephone,” the latest single and her personal favorite song off the tracklist.
Before her hit single “(It Goes Like) Nanana” would explode online, charting anywhere and everywhere imaginable, Gou was already an accomplished DJ noted for her tendency to break records. Whether becoming the first Korean DJ to play at Berlin’s internationally known Berghain or being the first woman in 20 years to appear on the top 10 of 100 off DJ Mag’s annual list, exceeding expectations has become expected of her.
Similar to Gou’s other hit single, “Starry Night,” “Lobster Telephone” takes inspiration from another well-known artist, this time taking its title from Salvador Dalí’s surrealist sculpture. Like the art piece it shares its name with, the song is dominated by Korean lyrics that are so surreal their meaning gets lost in translation. What isn’t lost is the infectious 80s glitz inflections working in tandem with the Chicago house influence.

Although there’s a distinct modern quality in the track’s well-mixed clarity, the bridging between 80s and 90s electronic music plays to Gou’s strengths as a tastemaker. The chorus, in particular, is perhaps the bounciest moment of the song, playing up how lovably quirky her production can get. The full-length version is even more lavish in its variety of effects than the edit, adding on hi-hats and laser ray sounds that build back up to the booming bass.
Since her global breakthrough, Gou has been riding high on the attention that “(It Goes Like) Nanana” has brought her while still taking creative chances that stick to her poetic flair. After playing Coachella, Primavera, and Glastonbury in recent memory, she’s set to play her biggest show, Gunnersbury Park, in London on Aug. 17. While no one thing can be attributed to Gou’s growth in popularity within the last few years, part of her success is due to her ear for what gets crowds moving and what will keep her true to herself as an artist.
“‘I Hear You’ is more than just my debut album. It embodies countless hours of dedication in my journey to create something timeless, and is a testament to the power of listening, to ourselves and to each other,” said Gou on the album’s creation.
