It's looking to be a jam-packed day of concerts with three fests added to the mix this Sat., May 28. Breakdown below.
97X Backyard BBQ w/Young the Giant & more A Memorial Weekend tradition, 97X Backyard BBQ features select station favorite groups all assembled on one stage – and with the scenic waterside locale, it tends to feel like a music festival in miniature. Leading the 2016 edition is Cali’s anthemic alt rockers Young the Giant, which aren’t due to release third album Home of the Strange til August but have delivered previews in a few slinky grooving singles – the pulsing and pounding “Amerika” and more urgently magnetic “Something to Believe In” – that indicate studio greatness. Other BBQ highlights in uplifting Canadian folk-pop sextet Strumbellas (you’ve likely heard the boisterous “Spirits”), synthy post-punk makers Bear Hands, and vibrant indie pop refreshers Jr. Jr.; Joywave, The Wombats, Never Shout Never and Finish Ticket also perform. Theoretically, Backyard BBQ is free. ‘Course, like all 97X no-admission events, you have to show up to a drop to acquire your free tickets. Get dates and drop sites at 97xonline.com. You can also pony up $20 on Ticketmaster. (Vinoy Waterfront Park, St. Petersburg)
Tampa Bay Margarita Festival with Blues Traveler In addition to hand-crafted margaritas in every flavor imaginable (Sriracha Strawberry Rita, anyone?), the fourth annual downtown fest features a day packed full of entertainment. Bay area acts Tattered Saints, Gritt, Keko & Mo Gravy, Southern Train and Mighty Mongo get the crowd warmed up and grooving for the headliners, harmonica-soulful pop-savvy rock heavyweights Blues Traveler. A fireworks show brings the event to its explosive conclusion. (Curtis Hixon Park, downtown Tampa)
Joe Walsh with Bad Company, Makana Joe Walsh is the iconic axe-slinger who peddled his musical goods in several bands of note (the Eagles included), then made his solo way with blues-scorched hits like “Life's Been Good” and “Rocky Mountain Way.” British hard rock group Bad Company came up around the same time and like Walsh, remains a radio staple with songs that include their titular hit along with “Feel Like Makin’ Love,” “Can’t Get Enough” and “Can't Get Enough.” Warm-up for both from slack key guitarist Makana. (MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre, Tampa)
Gemini: An Expression of Love for Venture Compound The celestial series geared at raising funds for the nonprofit mixed used space assembles a diverse slate of local talent each month. The twins-themed May edition celebrates the birthday of series organizer Michael Couling, aka Raven Terrapin, who performs with his avant rap group Direwood. It’s also the live debut of Panamory – the new synth-pop project of David the Day (guitars, production), vocalist Lauren Lance and violinist Douglas Katez (vocals) – and a release party for their first album, Uses for Humans. Other performers on this night include Julex, Panamory, Laghima, Joe Suel, DEA and Saint, The Omni Project, Shifted Grimm and Mirkwood. (Venture Compound, St. Petersburg)
Riddle of Steel with Traindodge, Auto!Automatic!! A resounding cheer could be heard echoing through the streets of Ybor City when Jack confirmed the return of Riddle of Steel. Not to be confused with the Conan the Barbarian-inspired RPG game, the St. Louis three-piece pushes out cerebral rock with stoner and math qualities – muscular guitars, grinding lowend, and rhythms that tend to change the pace and alter the trajectory from ball-busting propulsion to more calculated grind. RIYL: Queens of the Stone Age, Aan. (Crowbar, Ybor City)
Boxcar Hollow with Flat Land The Skipperdome presents a double dose of diverse Florida jams – post-modern folk-Americana from St. Pete quartet Boxcar Hollow, and Latin-laced femme-led soul grooving rocktronica by way of Gainesville-bred outfit Flat Land. (Skipper’s Smokehouse, Tampa)
Sunset Music Festival with Hardwell, Galantis, Jason Ross, Tritonal, Rezz, Nghtmre (Saturday); and Jack Ü, The Chainsmokers, Sam Feldt, Party Favor (Sunday) The last big music fest in Tampa Bay before the muggy summer weather hits in earnest is now in its fifth year of bringing high caliber EDM talent along with hard-buzzing and emerging genre stars to town for a weekend of unz n’ dance. A pre-party at The Ritz Ybor ushers in the festivities on Friday. The main event happens in the north lot of RayJay Stadium. Saturday’s lineup is led by a couple of big room and electro house music makers – Dutch producer Hardwell and Swedish duo Galantis, the latter leaning more to dance pop and progressive house domains – while trap-slapped house DJs The Chainsmokers warm the crowd before EDM super duo Jack Ü (comprised of veritable genre stars Skrillex and Diplo) rage Sunday to a close. Two venues worth of official after-parties are held in Ybor following the fest both nights. (Raymond James Stadium, Tampa)
Sunset Music Festival After Parties, Night 1 (The Ritz Ybor, Orpheum, Ybor City)
Rise of Saturn (Dunedin Brewery, Dunedin)
The Applebutter Express w/Florida Mountain Boys (Ale and the Witch, St. Petersburg)
Free Metal Show w/Frost Fang/Spar/Grave Gnosis/Donner Reed (Local 662, St. Petersburg)
