The popular EDM fest was set to take place in Union Park in June.
Spring Awakening Music Festival was set to return to Chicago from June 12 through 14, moving to Union Park after taking the annual festival to suburban Hoffman Estates last summer. Today organizers posted a statement on Spring Awakening’s social media accounts explaining their decision to cancel the 2020 edition of the EDM-focused fest and revealed plans to celebrate the event’s 10th anniversary in 2021.
“Amidst the current pandemic, we believe that in order to ensure the health and safety of all and the festival experience, it’s in the best interest to postpone to 2021,” organizers said in the statement. The cancelation demonstrates how drastically the situation has shifted since March 13, when producers React Presents released a statement with assurances that Spring Awakening was “moving forward as planned.”
Spring Awakening ticket-holders may hang on to their current tickets, which will be valid for the 2021 edition of the festival and will entitle the bearer to a “benefits package.” All ticket holders will also receive an email detailing how they can request refund if they choose not to keep their tickets.
The cancelation of Spring Awakening’s 2020 festival is just the latest in a string of high-profile events that are putting their summer plans on hold. Today, the annual Chosen Few Picnic & Festival canceled its July 4 gathering in Jackson Park in favor of an online event, while the Square Roots Festival in Lincoln Square was postponed until August 28 through 30. Earlier this week, the city canceled its annual Chicago Blues Festival, House Music Festival and Gospel Music Festival entirely.
