Back in February, the organizers behind Spring Awakening announced that the EDM festival would be moving to Jackson Park for its 2016 edition. A change in venue was necessary due to the fact that the festival’s usual home, Soldier Field, will be hosting the Copa América Centenario international soccer tournament during most of June—conflicting with the event’s June 10–12 dates. When local promoter React Presents announced Spring Awakening’s relocation to Jackson Park, it released an elaborate promotional video, boasting that the expanded event would now offer eight stages and carnival rides.
Chicago magazine is now reporting that Spring Awakening “is not scheduled to go off in Jackson Park, though organizers are still considering different parks,” citing a Parks District spokesperson. A quick scan of the festival’s website reveals that all mentions of Jackson Park have been removed, though tickets to the event (which is a little less than two months away) are still on sale. Chicago magazine previously reported that Alderman Leslie Hairston had not approved of the festival’s relocation to her ward, while Jackson Park neighborhood groups openly opposed the move.
Within the past two weeks, React Presents has revealed lineups for its North Coast and Mamby on the Beach music festivals, so the continued absence of a lineup for Spring Awakening is odd, to say the least. Organizer React Presents has not commented on Spring Awakening’s lack of a venue or confirmed whether or not previously purchased tickets will be honored. Until the festival nails down a venue (and confirms its use of said venue with the community) you may want to save your money for other electronic-leaning summer events.
UPDATE:
On Friday afternoon, React Presents released a brief statement about the current status of the Spring Awakening Music Festival:
“In February, Spring Awakening was given conditional approval to announce the new location in Jackson Park; but after the announcement, scheduling conflicts arose with another event in the community, and both events were unable to coexist on the same weekend. We are working proactively with the City of Chicago to secure a new venue for the event, and are planning to announce the new location and lineup very soon.”
Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.
